Judiciary, Gaibandha has a glorious history. In 1875, a subdivision called Gaibandha Subdivision was established comprising Gaibandha Sadar, Sundarganj, Gobindaganj, Sadullapur, Palashbari, Fulchhari and Saghata.Before 1984, there were Gaibandha Munsef Court, Sub-Judge Court and Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDO) Magistrate Court. In 1984, District Judge Court, Gaibandha and District Magistrate Court were established. Mr. M. K. Roy joined the Gaibandha District Judge's Court as the first District and Sessions Judge. Before the establishment of the Upazila, the Gaibandha District Judge's Court had a District Judge's Court, a Sub-Judge's Court and a Munsef's Court. After the establishment of the upazila in 1984, the cases of each Munsef court were transferred to the court with territorial jurisdiction of the newly created upazila of the district.At that time, there were only District Judge's Court, Sub-Judge's Court and Gaibandha Sadar Munsef Court in Gaibandha. Later, Sadar Munsef Court and Upazila Munsef Courts were considered as Assistant Judge's Courts. On the other hand, cases of the Magistrate Court are sent to the Magistrate Court established in the Upazila. In 1992, the District Magistrate Court, along with the Subordinate Magistrate Courts and the District Judge Court and its subordinate courts, located in the old Kachari Bazar, were shifted to a place called South Dhanghara (Gobindapur Mouza). Then on 30-06-1993, the functions of all the courts were shifted from the upazilas to their present location.
Based on constitutional obligations, in the wake of the verdict in the famous Masdar Hossain case, the government separated the Magistracy from the Executive Branch on 01-11-2007 for the purpose of conducting judicial proceedings in criminal cases. At that time, separate judicial magistracies were formed in 64 districts of Bangladesh and the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court began functioning in Gaibandha district. Mr. Md. Abdus Salam was appointed as the Chief Judicial Magistrate as the head of this newly formed court. Later, on 10-03-2013, a Senior Judicial Magistrate Court was transferred from Gaibandha District to Gobindaganj Upazila under the name Senior Judicial Magistrate Gobindaganj (Chowki) Court. There are 02 Additional District and Sessions Judge Courts, 02 Joint District and Sessions Judge Courts, 01 Land Survey Tribunal, 07 Senior/Assistant Judge Courts (including Gobindaganj Chowki Court) under the District and Sessions Judge Court, Gaibandha.Currently, there are 04 (four) Senior Judicial Magistrate Courts (including Gobindaganj Chowki Court) and 05 (five) Judicial Magistrate Courts in Gaibandha district, in addition to the Chief Judicial Magistrate and Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Courts. In addition, there are 02 Women and Children Abuse Prevention Tribunals in Gaibandha, in which 02 judges of the rank of District and Sessions Judges are working.
